Khama III

(c. 1838–1923)
   Monarch.
Khama III became Chief of the Ngwato tribe of Southern Africa in 1875. He had been converted to Christianity in 1862 and, once Chief, he supported missions among his people and tried to rule his lands by Christian standards. In particular, he controlled the sale of alcohol, he outlawed many tribal customs and he was determined to dispense justice as fairly as possible. In general he was remarkably successful. In 1885 he accepted the protection of the British and his grandson Seretse Khama became the first President of Botswana when the country achieved independence.
